Key tips for fly fishing Permit:
- Stealth first. These fish are easily spooked on the flats, quiet wading/poling and no sudden movements matter.
- Spot before you cast. Permit and bonefish are often seen (tailing, pushing water, mudding) before you get the cast.
- Lead the fish or cast at it. Present the fly ahead of its path so it looks natural but sometimes they will show close by all you got to do is SHOOT AT THEM so they see the fly.
- Casting distance, will make your life and your guides life way easier. Expect long shots with light tippet and a light fly.
- Match the fly to conditions. Crab and shrimp patterns for permit; small baitfish or shrimp imitations for bonefish, sized to the water clarity and light.
- Use the right leader. Fluorocarbon, sized appropriately (lighter for bonefish, stronger for permit’s harder runs).
- Expect refusals — especially with permit. Patience and repeated good presentations beat one perfect cast.
- Read the tide. Moving water pushes fish either in or out of the falts, make sure is enough water!
- Watch your fly line. When you hook a permit, the fish starts running is really important you see all the line you stripped out, is getting inside the reel, as the fish is going away!.
